What is Scoliosis?

Occurring most often during a person’s growth spurt just prior to puberty, Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. About 3% of adolescents have this often-painful condition.

Though most scoliosis cases are mild, some instances of spinal deformity increase in severity as a child grows. When the spine becomes severely curved it reduces the space for the lungs to function properly.

Children with mild scoliosis often are prescribed a brace to prevent the curve from worsening. Severe cases may warrant surgery.

Complications

Some of the most common complications of scoliosis include:

  • Back Pain – while we cannot prevent scoliosis, we can offer real answers for the back pain caused by it. Even after it is corrected, adults often suffer from chronic back pain.
  • Heart and Lung Damage – the rib cage sometimes presses against the heart and lungs in severe cases.
  • Appearance – As scoliosis progresses, it can cause increasingly noticeable changes – including prominent ribs, uneven shoulders and hips, and a shift of the waist and trunk to the side. This often causes individuals suffering from the condition to become self-conscious about their appearance.

Causes

Researchers are unsure of what causes scoliosis, but it seems to involve hereditary factors. Rare types of scoliosis may be caused by:

  • Infections or Injuries to the spine
  • Neuromuscular conditions, such as muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy
  • Birth defects that affect the development of the bones of the spine

Risk Factors

Risk factors that indicate the appearance of scoliosis include:

  • Age - Symptoms and signs and often begin during the growth spurt that precedes puberty.
  • Gender - Although both girls and boys develop mild scoliosis at about the same rate, girls are at a much higher risk of the curve worsening to the point it requires treatment.
  • Family history - Scoliosis sometimes runs in families, but most children with the condition do not have a family history of Scoliosis.
