How Poor Posture Can Lead to Aches and Pains

Poor posture can lead to physical aches and pains. Poor posture can also negatively affect your mood and prevent you from being productive. Poor posture can also constrict your stomach, causing gastrointestinal issues. At Boca Health & Wellness Center, our chiropractor has years of experience helping patients improve their posture.

Preventing Poor Posture

One way to improve posture is to make sure your work environment is ergonomically correct. If you work at a desk, make sure your monitor is high enough that you do not need to lean down to see it. The middle of your monitor should be at eye level when you are sitting up straight. Your knees should be bent at an angle with your feet flat on the floor.

If you stand during the day, ask your employer to provide an ergonomic standing mat. This spongy mat is slightly unstable, which forces you to move ever so slightly while standing. This movement activates your muscles, improving your posture.

Changes at Home

Poor posture doesn’t just happen at work. How often do you find yourself looking down at your phone? Text neck, which is neck pain from tilting your head downward to read your phone, is a common occurrence. To prevent this, hold your phone up at eye level.

Do you have a soft mattress? A firm mattress offers more spinal support when sleeping. You should also make sure your head is level with your spine while sleeping on your side.

Even driving can cause poor posture. Make sure your seat is close enough to the steering wheel for you to maintain good posture while driving. Your knees should be slightly bent at hip level or a little higher.
